Skirts!

Yesterday and today I have been busy making skirts for my 8 year old daughter.  And by busy, I mean everything-else-got-neglected busy.

Since she was about 5 years old, Gianna has had her own fashion style.  I love that about her.  Since I also love to make little girl dresses and skirts, I had to make a conscious decision to not be disappointed that I could no longer dress her up.

For the past 3 years she has been a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal.  And, really, she still is.  But, a few months ago she came across a twirl skirt I made her when she was 4, (she also doesn't like to get rid of things) and it still fit!  It hit her mid-calf when she was 4 and hits her right at the knees now.

Last week she asked me if I would make her more skirts.

Ummm....yeah!

She chose the fabrics this weekend and I started sewing yesterday.

I made the first skirt using this tutorial.

It was SO easy...

And, SO cute!

But, when Gianna tried it on, she was disappointed at its subpar twirling capability.  We decided to do tiered twirl skirts for the last two (like the one I made her 4 years ago).

Because I hadn't planned on making twirl skirts, which take waaaay more fabric, I had to improvise a bit and add fabric from my stash.

For this one, I made the tiers less full and we added the lavender floral fabric at the top.

I don't care much for this skirt, but then, I won't be the one wearing it.

For the last skirt, we added Kona Cotton in Water for the middle tier and I had enough of the other fabrics to make the tiers super full.

I felt like I was gathering miles....

and miles of ruffles....

The time spent gathering was worth it in the end.

Now, that is some twirl action!

This skirt is my favorite and Gianna's favorite.

Which one is your favorite?

    1. I love that fabric, too, Karen. It is by Michael Miller and was 50% off at Bernina Connection in Phoenix! Score!

  2. All 3 are super cute! My favorite is the twirly one ~ super bright, pretty color, and who can resist the twirl? :) Did you have a pattern for that one, or how did you figure how much fabric for each tier?

    1. Thanks, Cindy! I didn't use a pattern, but I'm thinking about doing a tutorial. Basically, I cut the 3 different fabrics like this:

Top tier: 1 - 7 inch strip of fabric from selvage to selvage.
Middle tier: 2 - 6 inch strips of fabric from selvage to selvage.
Bottom tier: 4 - 7 inch strips of fabric from selvage to selvage.

Does that make sense at all? Lol

  3. Is there a tutorial for the twirly skirt? I love them!
And I really like the twirly one you said you don't care for. :-)

    1. That's funny! I prefer really bright colors. But as long as Gianna likes it, I'm happy. :) There isn't a tutorial for the skirt, but maybe I should do one?
